In earlier times, brides often traveled long distances to their marital homes. Kalire were originally made of dried coconut and lotus seeds (Phool Makahana), which could serve as food for the bride during the journey.

Kalire were believed to act as a protective charm, shielding the bride from evil spirits and negativity as she stepped into her new life. The umbrella shape represents a shelter of blessings and guidance from her maternal home. The hanging trinkets further symbolize abundance, wealth and a prosperous married life. Over centuries, Kalire evolved into an emotional and fun filled wedding ceremony. The tradition of shaking the Kalire over unmarried and single friends' heads (where a piece falling signifies the next bride/groom to be) is a more recent, playful addition.

Brides wear Choora as part of a traditional punjabi wedding custom. The Choora is a set of red and white (or ivory) bangles, sometimes adorned with gold or other embellishments, and hold deep cultural and emotional significance.

The Choora signifies that a woman is newly married. The red and white colors symbolize prosperity, happiness, and purity. Traditionally, it consists of 21 or 51 bangles.

The Choora is given to the bride by her maternal uncle and aunt (mama and mami). The Choora is purified by dipping it in a mixture of milk and rose water.

It is customary for a bride to wear her Choora for  over 40 days.
